And that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to crime because you know darn well there are way many more that either don't get reported or simply don't know who did it.
LOL. I wish it was that easy. Nothing here appears to be partisan. It is often blocks of Republicans standing up to our Republican governor, not blocks of Democrats.
In just the last 2 years, I've observed many within SD GOP stand up against the 'ruling party'. Especially in the areas of life, liberty and property rights. It's interesting to observe, starting with SB 201, how perseverance won out. The momentum is growing.
RL21 (defeat of SB201) was a consortium - Democrats, Independents and Republicans. No on Amendment H was also a non-partisan coalition (Democrats, Independents and Republicans working together). Often its outsiders against the people of South Dakota. At that point it doesn't matter what letter is behind our names, we are together.
Yes, a definite consortium. My context was directed at behavior within the Legislative Body itself, rallying around SB 201 (where a former legislator of said 'ruling' majority called people garbage and pond scum) that resulted in grassroots referendum efforts, by, yes, a consortium of all voters to its defeat! Ditto on H.
Spreading out Reentry and work release across the state to their closest center locally was the idea of Ryan Kolbeck, defense lawyer, that spoke at the first prison taskforce meeting. Coupled with Steve Haugaard's ideas on more supervision at release and focused mentoring is a good combination for success!
Could you please provide a little more perspective here. Are these people also talking about spreading out the incarceration? That appears to be a concern as well. Apparently there is an intermediate step that needs to be decentralized as well. In other words to stop the crime element the prisoners need to be spread out during incarceration and then remain spread out around the state during reentry.
Yes, I believe that's what he's saying, spread out the incarceration and work release centers - and addiction resource supports - across the state. I wish I had access to the handouts he gave the taskforce that day! This is from John Holt at Searchlight.
"Defense lawyer, former warden: Consider more than one location
Ryan Kolbeck, a Sioux Falls defense lawyer, asked the work group to look beyond one Sioux Falls-area prison as a solution.
His clients often struggle with addiction, Kolbeck said, and they have better chances in his city because there’s a better chance they’ll get a slot in treatment.
He said the state ought to find ways to expand probation supervision and addiction treatment in rural areas so defendants there have as many chances to sidestep a prison sentence as those in Sioux Falls do."
"Kolbeck suggested smaller work release centers around the state, in addition to any higher-security facility. He pointed to Vermillion, where voters just approved a new jail and students at the University of South Dakota might partner with the Department of Corrections to help boost the number of inmates earning their high school diploma behind bars."
No one wants it. What is the solution? The Sioux Falls Metro appears to be taking 85% of the male prisoners in the state for reentry. It is not working and costing the taxpayers a pile of unnecessary money because they are failing. How do we spread it out? Should people go back to the closest center to their hometown for reentry? Something else?
I am inundated with petitions to sign and petitioners who want donations. I know money is a necessity to do as much as is involved today to try to correct the dictator system that Trump is trying to get to take over. But Petitioners, I resent anyone sending me a valid list of wrongs and only asking for money. You don't even give me a valid petition to sign. And do you realize I would give more than I have coming in if I gave a limited equal amount to every petitioner who's petition I agree with. So take my advice, don't ask for money without a valid petition and don't waste your time if I can't check on you to verify you are a legitimate petitioner.
Crime gradually expands to smaller, easier places to rob! Like Sioux Falls the crime daily is increasing, more shootings everyday! When i lived in the outer most city from Kansas City for seven years it was going from not much crime to effecting everyone in this small suburb. Went from a decent neighborhood kids could play outside until some in the hood started walking around smoking crack in the open. My nice big truck was stolen right out of our front door with all the tools in it. I did get readies, people move out i refurbish what needed done for the next renters. Many places i went to i carried a gun, you only worked during daylight and got out before dark. Crime moved out from the inner city, it was easier to steal and get away with it! Here in this state just like every other state it’s always the blame game in politics, the human being in us is never satisfied, we always have someone who can do it better, fact is theres no one of either party perfect, and like i always say if you don’t like it run for office. I for one would like to see prisons go back to chain gangs, no special catering inside. These prisoners have it better than some people on the outside have it! These prisoners thing is were all going to see an increase in crime, its coming to a small town near you and haas been for some time.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Perhaps we can avoid that path if we adopt some wise policies. I noticed the citizens in Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties are unifying to protect the region. That appears to be the way - less corporate welfare handouts, less indentured servants, and less taxes, and more positive, organic growth.
Thats perfectly fine, it’s time for people to start waking up and instead of letting others handle a situation do something start working together to solve problems. Most people hardly know the time of day, just live life day to to day inside there own little world. People need to get involved and work together not against each other how wonderful that would be!
These issues do all seem to interconnect. Our leaders seem to be addicted to the idea of “economic development”. I suspect there may be inappropriate connections with it. If they can throw enough money out to get the businesses to open here, they have to find workers as well. Thankfully, we have not yet out and out imported mass amounts of refugees which seems to be a solution in many cases. I think the prisoner importation and homeless importations are what some think will be a solution. We had a similar issue in Aberdeen opening our beef plant. Some thought they could bring up natives from the reservations, who were unemployed. Common sense will tell anyone that that nor the criminal/homeless imports will only cause harm and/or not work at All. We need to shut down this economic development off the taxpayers backs and let our finances and social cohesion stabilize.
I think all this talk about "invasions" is just a way to ignore real problems. Everyone comes from somewhere else, and they are on their way to someplace else. That's the human condition, which even you have experienced in your life. If you want to talk about invasions in South Dakota, you have to go back to the mid-1800s, when white people began to invade.
South Dakota's crime problem is more about recidivism than it is about any invasion. You yourself understand that, but seem to ignore it when you want to express hate for "foreign workers."
There's a lot of mixed up stuff in this post. Some of it I agree with. Companies that come in and try to swindle people or roll over them have been a problem in South Dakota since territorial days. The fact that such companies and wealthy individuals buy out the Legislature is why South Dakota was the first state to provide its citizens with the initiative and referendum. That the majority controls on such ballot measures is key to defense of South Dakota's people. Yet you support minority control on Initiated Amendments. That is just handing the keys to the Legislature over to the out-of-state and in-state special interests.
One of the things we should never do is mistake the people who move to South Dakota to work as criminals. They are people, just like you. At some point you lived in Florida then moved to South Dakota. You seem to think that people in Minneapolis or St. Louis are some sort of criminals, yet there are a lot of South Dakotans who end up in the Twin Cities not for crime, but for jobs. I don't understand why you think such failed attempts to ginning up hate against people is necessary.
We greatly appreciate your opinion. I am not sure you know what any of the blog writers personally think. Everything on this blog is written with a slant to encourage dialog. Crime - Perhaps you could share data about the lack of a crime problem. It appears that it is far greater than being reported. Apparently there was a shooting at Bin201 in Sioux Falls over the weekend - not reported in the news media. People only know because people were there. There were also reports of an issue at a Subway in Harrisburg. Again, nothing on the crime log. Perhaps you could share some data on what the crime problem is. If it is really all from one type of problem that helps with decision making.
Two incidents does not make a crime wave, but any such incidents are concerning, and the fact that you seem to be reporting rumors rather than digging out facts is a crime in itself. Let me help you out.
The Bin201 incident was reported in the media. There has been at least one other similar incident there that was reported in the media. Bars sometimes attract trouble,
but often these things happen outside bars. A lot depends on how the bar and property is managed. That can be a matter that can be addressed through its licenses. If people are concerned, they need to address the issue with law enforcement, their city government and the managers of the establishment.
Thank you, yes it did finally make the news after this was posted (several days after the event and this particular one was right across the street from the news station). There were four shootings this weekend in Sioux Falls. Some of the details are now available on Kelo.
Sadly the news was days late and very short on facts. The real information is coming from those that were in the area at the time of the incident. In this particular case, I have reliable information that is much more accurate than what was presented by the media.
Why is that deceptive? It would be deceptive to say it was at the bar if it occurred off the property. If a reporter can''t establish that an incident occurred in a bar, the reporter can't say that it occurred in a bar. A previous incident at that address did not occur within the bar. It was outside, maybe even off the property. I can't understand why you think news reports should be fake news. You obviously have no experience in journalism.
Because, Donald "Boomer" Pay, we know personally a young woman who was at Bin21 on the night of the shooting, dodging the fucking bullets. Yes, KELO is a pussy news network, who did poor reporting. Some advice, go buy a fifth of Jack, take 10 sleeping pills and go away. The world will not be at peace until all of the Boomers are gone. A curse on all of you
And that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to crime because you know darn well there are way many more that either don't get reported or simply don't know who did it.
The business owner in Worthing reported that two of the three robberies were unsolved. The goods from the third one were discovered on Facebook.
Excellent reporting.
Thank you!
Single party rule avoids getting alternative ideas and solutions. Everything in South Dakota is exactly the way the ruling party wants it to be.
LOL. I wish it was that easy. Nothing here appears to be partisan. It is often blocks of Republicans standing up to our Republican governor, not blocks of Democrats.

Thank you
Thank you for mentioning Ryan and reiterating Steve's ideas about supervision and mentoring.
Let's not forget that Yankton already has a federal prison. Generally, I think that people here do not want another one.
I think going back to their local area via a work release/parole/counseling program makes rational sense and worth trying. Good idea!

"it did finally make the news...."
The difference between rumors and journalism is that journalism requires facts, whereas rumors do not.
Sadly the news was days late and very short on facts. The real information is coming from those that were in the area at the time of the incident. In this particular case, I have reliable information that is much more accurate than what was presented by the media.
the reporting was highly deceptive. KELO reported the event at "11th and 2nd." They didn't name the bar.
Why is that deceptive? It would be deceptive to say it was at the bar if it occurred off the property. While we understand and appreciate your point, there is a lot for pertinent information that was not disclosed by the media.
Because, Donald "Boomer" Pay, we know personally a young woman who was at Bin21 on the night of the shooting, dodging the fucking bullets. Yes, KELO is a pussy news network, who did poor reporting. Catering to the homeless should not be happening, e.g. Church on the Street. It all sounds compassionate but it leads to chaos that is toxic.
