Economic development for who Sioux Falls? When I challenged our representatives from Minnehahahahahahahaha and surrounding counties about SB201, a few replied and touted that it was for economic development! Those two words are starting to sound to me like "where's our kickbacks"!!
Used to cut contracts for the USFA in CA and the timber industry was the biggest abuser of slave labor there. They relied solely on green card visa workers to maintain their businesses. Shame on the Chamber of Congress in this country pushing slave labor!
South Dakota Voices Response: J, thank you for joining us and asking your question again. We use the Substack writing platform. Substack is based in San Francisco. They put their address on everything. We would be happy to use a South Dakota writing platform, but haven't been able to find anything local that is equivalent. We aren't working for anyone. The only money we receive is from our subscribers. The goal is to present complicated issues and get people talking about the issues and possible solutions. We look forward to having you join these discussions (in the comments). Thanks again for your initial question and your followup.
Email comment to JC: "If your voice is for South Dakota why is your address San Francisco California? Who are you really working for? Who is funding all of your work?"
Response from South Dakota Voices: Janet, thank you for joining the conversation. It is nice to hear from you. Would you be so kind as to provide some links showing that the taxpayers do not have extra costs from the foreign workers. Do these foreign workers/immigrants live in taxpayer subsidized low income housing, have children who are not at grade level in taxpayer funded schools, take taxpayer funded public transportation? Are we sure there is no downward wage pressure on citizens and that these policies are not putting some citizens into poverty. Thank you again for joining us. We look forward to learning from you.
Email comment from JW: "You are pretty much describing the amount of money working immigrants bring into the state of SD. Please investigate this, and support standing against Trump removing immigrants. One dairy farmer, in california, who has such a large dairy farm that they milk cows 24-7, says half his employees are immigrants. He said that if these immigrants were taken away, that in two days the milk supply to his patrons would stop. On top of that, he said that the milk business is so fragile that this would shut the company down and there would be no restarting it. It would be over. In fact, the same goes for produce and many food production companies. We sure would not like to see the fresh food chain shut down in two days. Yes, Trump, should go after criminals. But the US has specific laws they follow when they give a green card, and it is not right to break the promises we make to the Immigrant. They came trusting the US pledge to the immigrant. Governor Rounds does not seem to be for the Immigrant, and this is going to hurt South Dakota badly."
South Dakota Voice Response: Joy, thank you so much for joining the conversation. Your question about San Francisco is a good one. Substack, the writing platform we use, is located in San Francisco so their address shows up on all the posts. We would love to use a South Dakota product, but have not found anything equivalent. Thank you again for joining us.
Email comment from JH: "I enjoy your newsletter. Your insights are always interesting and not necessarily things I hear anywhere else. Just wondering why you are located in San Francisco."
South Dakota Voices Response: Thank you LJ for joining the conversation. Would you mind telling us what parts of the post suggest we should move to California?
I recall, during the debate on SB 201, the many touts for economic development as the supposed way forward, and, as Rep. Liz Marty remarked on the House floor "is this new green energy scam the way forward now for farmers to pay their property taxes". Yes, and speaking of kickbacks, I don't think we've ever gotten to the bottom of the EB5 GOED controversy when Mr. Benda was, unfortunately, found "suicided" in Charles Mix County in '13. This is a very important issue.
Interesting article and a driver for conversation. It’s good to have another SD voice covering the issues.
