I was interested in the supposed first 4th of July celebration in South Dakota, so I read the linked study on the history of the Atkinson-O'Fallon Treaty, the "negotiation" of which included an interlude in which the white American soldiers tried to impress the Indians by firing guns off during a celebration of July 4th. Whether this was a genuine "celebration" or a means to impress the Indians enough to extract signatures on a treaty, it is clear that the so-called "treaty" had been written down prior to even hearing what the Indians wanted. The treaty said that the tribes would recognize the "sovereignty" of the US government, but what "sovereignty" meant to Indians was vastly different from what the US side meant. The "record" of that "negotiation" did not include anything the tribal representatives said.

Thank you for sharing that information. Very interesting. Treaties are not a strong suit for the U.S. They are almost always broken whether it is one with the Sioux, the Russians (involving NATO), or the Treaty of Versailles. Of course, the Sioux frequently broke its treaties with the Cheyenne and the Arapahoe and the Russians and Germans have broken treaties too. It's all a bit of a mess.

The Indians broke lots of treaties also. Go back to Roanoke, they were the fist to break an agreement. How about Tecumseh during the war of 1812? He warned the Michigan tribes that the new country had kept its treaties with them and if they join the British it would spell disaster. First they would get nothing back if the British won, after all it was the British that wanted to genocide the Indians. If the new country won they would never forgive or forget. Then they lost the war, to victors go the spoils.

Looking at the actions of the past through the lens of today is a fools chase.

Your history is nonsense. Tecumseh wouldn't sign treaties and believed tribes weren't bound by treaties that ceded native lands, because of indigenous belief that land was not owned and therefore could not be ceded.

Your reading is nonsense, I did not say Tecumseh signed anything, learn to read. Therefore anything else you just wrote is babble. You are the perfect example of the US public education system. Just because you want to ignore history does not make it go away. At the same time if Europeans would not have arrived when they did the entire population of North America, at that time (meaning back then), would have been dead in a few more generations because of VD. Since the various tribes were always at war and rape was common it spread fast. To the victors go the spoils.
